How tolerant are you regarding matters on religion, politics, war, illegal drug use, abortion, homosexuality and other controversial issues, especially ones which you take very seriously/personally? How tolerant are you? (Result) 1. No matter how opposing individual views are, I listen calmly and try to see their perspective and always respond in a friendly manner. In fact I love debating highly controversial topics, especially when my views are challenged! 2. As above though I might display some anger/sarcasm during the debate. 3. As #1 but there is at least one area which I feel far too strongly about to bear having it undermined. In which case I will not partake in the discussion. 4. I will part company with the individual/s if their opinions seriously conflict with my own, though I might possibly return when I have calmed down. 5. I will part company with the individual/s and never return if their opinions seriously conflict with my own. 6. I have nothing whatsoever to do with people who have opposing views to my own regarding issues which I take seriously. 7. Other

It's a funny thing this because often I've argued the liberal viewpoint but sometimes I think to myself by challenging or not accepting someone's view* how tolerant am I being? * Not that I'd say I didn't accept it, actually it's usually terminology that gets my hackles up, so the exact same viewpoint may not get any reaction from me at all if expressed in an unoffensive manner.

In fact I had to delete the first version of this poll which didn't include option #2 on realising that I needed the option myself. ... by challenging or not accepting someone's view* how tolerant am I being?- Heather I don't think challenging or refusing to accept a person's viewpoint is being intolerant, Heather. It's refusing to listen to another's viewpoint, or showing a lack of respect towards it that's intolerant. You are always tolerant to opposing viewpoints. Irene, I think you are very tolerant. You can stick with a topic, no matter how extreme and annoying a person's viewpoint can be, and argue your side academically. And we already know that Ray is Ditto's very own diplomat!

If I predict an endless deluge of argument to commence based on something I feel strongly about, the most I'll do is state my opinion then bow out. Life's too bloody short to go back and forth on something that can't be changed, there's other stuff I'd rather be doing.

We often disagree with one another but we never fall out.

Thanks, Julia, you must be right, I'm so tolerant I question whether my tolerance is tolerant enough. I think we're a pretty tolerant lot in general.

Mostly because I am a naturally sarcastic person. 90% of the time I will listen to people rationally and calmly give my own opinions. Some subjects however really get my goat and that's when I get angry and have to leave.

Anyway, I am very cognizant of others viewpoints as well as religious beliefs even though they do not mesh with mine. Because I know religion and certain political views can become heated, I tend to stop arguing when I sense it is becoming heated so that I do not 'fan the flames'. My point is that if one is not allowed to state their viewpoints and allowed to defend it then it is not really a fair and equitable post. Also, when people ridicules and berates a poster because of their viewpoints, their credibility is questionable. That is liek saying, "My viewpoints is all that matters and what you think is wrong!" That is not fair nor a mature thing to do.

I consider myself a very tolerant person in general (for example concerning gay rights/marriage or abortion or making "soft" drugs like marijuana legal or towards other religions and cultures) - I have always rather been an outsider/individualist than a mainstream person, and I believe in free choice and the individual conscience. BUT I hate heated discussions between opposing views because I think they lead absolutely nowhere as nobody is willing to change one iota of their opinion anyway, and I am not at all tolerant towards extreme views (whether left-ish or right-ish) ... I find it easy and rewarding to listen to any balanced, non-prejudiced point of view even if it doesn´t agree with mine. If the viewpoint is rather extremish, I can only bear to listen if the person a) doesn´t try to make it sound like a truth (instead of an opinion, which is not a truth) and b) is willing to at least consider the arguments of the opposing viewpoints ... When I state an opinion, I am always willing to consider other viewpoints and learn from them, even to change my opinion if I find that I was wrong or not well-informed enough. I don't believe in absolute truth because each question has so many variables. Perhaps it is my belief in the variables which allows me to choose a side and argue the point without getting my knickers in a ravel. What really gets up my nose is when someone just states something as fact without giving a reasons for believing it to be so and then runs away if anyone has the audacity to disagree with them. I can have respect for someone who disagrees with my point of view but has the guts to stand and defend their corner.

I can have respect for someone who disagrees with my point of view but has the guts to stand and defend their corner. I totally agree! Especially annoying is the hypocrisy, i.e. when they are so self righteous claiming to be completely tolerant but the second anyone dares state their different point of view they make sharp exits and treat you like dirt.

I usually do not attack these opinions or the people behind them though, but just walk away/keep away from these people (like I keep away from most of Ditto´s discussion threads). I will admit I find it hard to really like somebody who advances views that make me cringe. I cannot really separate the views from the rest of the person - so if I want to like somebody, and their views make me cringe, I must force myself not to think of their attitudes -- in a rather schizophrenic way. Is that normal or does that make me an intolerant person or even a hypocrite? My father, for example, is of the opinion that gay people are abnormal, unnatural and repellent and that they should "just repress it". He is still my father though and I want to like him ... we had a few heated discussions on this subject, and it seemed as if nothing I said influenced him in any way. But recently I got the feeling that he has become a tad more tolerant towards homosexuality. Another point - let´s say I would start advancing some right wing extremist views, terrible Nazi crap (I would never, of course, just theoretically, okay) ... how about tolerating that? What would you do? Would you still like me? Would you stay polite?

I consider myself fairly open minded, but my answer to the poll was 3. If you started advancing those views, I would be very uncomfortable and wouldn't interact with you. I might not confront you, but I would disappear and not have anything to do with you. I'm able to separate certain views from the person, but others I am unable to. If it were my own family I would probably get into an emotional argument, that would do no good, if it were my in-laws, who have made some mild remarks, sometimes I don't say anything. Other times I say "just because they are -------- (whatever) it doesn't mean anything. Anyone from any walk of life could do -----". (?whatever) At that point they usually will agree with me. I have no tolerance for rascism. I don't even make ethnic jokes. I realize mild jokes are probably not meant maliciously, but I don't tell them because of the one person who might be offended. There are some Nazi organizations in America, but I haven't seen them in my area of the country. I never saw the White Supremacists or KuKlux Clan either. Somehow all these organizations get crossed into by the others. I have heard some of their views, on the television, and can't believe that they are for real, but unfortunately they are. Is there much of that where you are Cassia? It's a shame because a lot of this kind of thing comes from being raised by parents who promote their bigoted views upon the child, and the child doesn't always know better to not believe it- almost like how children adopt religious ideology or even being fans of a certain sport's team. Unfortunately, there are some people who constantly talk rubbish; I just avoid their posts. Being such a nice refined lady, if anyone started spouting Klan or Nazi idiology I would just have to politely tell them they were talking crap.

Not where I am, as Frankfurt is a multi-cultural city, and rather left-ish politically ... a lot of my students are "foreigners", but I don´t see them like that, and I get along great with most of them, and if not, it has nothing to do with their cultural background. Most of the "foreigners" living here integrate themselves well ... during the recent European Football (Soccer) Championship, a lot of my students cheered for Turkey (the country where their parents come from), but after they´d lost against us, they were for Germany, and a lot of houses and cars had two flags - the German one and the one of their home country - Italy, Croatia, Turkey, Spanish, Portuguese ... That was nice!! But I have to admit that some parts of Germany, especially the Eastern part, the former GDR, teem with racism ... our cities are mostly multi-cultural and quite tolerant, but the smaller towns and villages can be bad - the less contact with foreigners, the more prejudice. As to the first part of what I quoted - I´m the same, I can tolerate some views although they´re not mine, others I can´t tolerate, but I can separate them from the person and still like the person, others again make me dislike the person and I walk away from these people.
