Satriani has a weak case, to be honest. He would have to show that Coldplay knew of his song and in some way consciously tried to plagieurize it, for one, and because Satriani released his song before Coldplay did theirs, that is no evidence that Coldplay wrote their song after Satriani released his own album.

And here's the main reason the case is weak: The Coldplay song can be analysed and considered to be in G#Major as it makes use, mainly, of the I - IV and V chords of that key (G#, C# and D#). This 1-4-5 (or any variation; 4-5-1 here) progression is the most common in rock music and it cannot be copyrighted. While the Fminor chord can be seen as the root chord in the Coldplay progression - it can also be seen as a "behind the root" chord (and it does belong in the G#major scale as is - it's perfectly diatonic to the G#major scale as the chord borrows no tones from another scale). It should be noted that the G#major scale and Fminor scales are what are known as "parrallel scales" as they use the exact same notes, so I can understand that the teacher considers the song to be in the key of F minor, but the presence of the three, unaltered major chords of the G# major progression leads me to think Coldplay had this latter scale in mind.

G#, C# and D# are also the same chords as Ab, Db and Eb.

b is the symbol for 'flat.'

I don't think there's a copyright violation either.

It's odd, I play guitar, and all players have had the "break the speed of light" phase and wanted to be flashy and spectacular, but I really can't sit through an entire album by the likes of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani or Yngwie Malmsteen. I can appreciate, even admire, their immense gift but I'm just not drawn to instrumental albums which such a focus on the guitar playing, the lead work mainly. I also find that there's something missing, to be honest. Maybe I just need the voice?

Same here - I do find the Vai's, Satriani's and Malmsteen's of the world, for all of their virtuoso, often lack rhythm and feel. They do approach guitar playing in a very technical way, and it shows.

Now you're talking - those players have a great feel. Gilmour in particular, it seems there's a little treatment for each and every note he plays, and this is coming from someone who is not exactly a big fan of Pink Floyd.
