personality? Do you think a person develops a personality or do you think it is something you are born with?

I definitely think that people are born with certain personality traits, and then as they grow up things that happen to them in their life may influence them
to a small degree.

I don't know... I haven't got kids so the pleasure of watching them grow & develop as people is something I haven't experienced. My instinct
would be that personality is such a unique personal trait that you are born with it but as Michelle says perhaps it can be influenced a little by life
experiences.

I think we are born with certain personality traits but most of it is developed throughout life. If traumas can change personalities totally then all
experiences must affect personality to a certain degree, culminating in our overall personality.

I agree.....that we are born with a certain degree of personality. As I said, my son showed signs of being agressive before he could even stand in his crib. My
daughter showed signs of being very laid back at a very early age also.
I guess we will never know how much and to what degree the other things that happened in our lives affected our personalities. |

I think we are born with a personality. I remember being very young maybe 2 or 3 and understanding things. eg right and wrong without ever being told at that
age. I also felt very wise and switch on. Then like Kodeine said we develope traits which alters the personality a little.

I don't know about being born with a certain personality. Maybe it's more of a predisposition when we're born. I think personality comes along when
we first develop self consciousness and a sense of our place in the world; namely in the first few years of life.

Well, as babies are very different from each other in behaviour, I think we are already born with the outlines of our personality (which of course keeps
developing all our lives).
My mum says I was a well-behaved, quiet baby, but very curious and attentive at the same time. I´m still that way.

I think both nature and nurture play a part but nurture is by far the predominant factor as it is for intellectual development, preferences/taste (including sexuality) and personality. kodeine wrote:

Both. The mother's experiences while pregnant can apparently play a part.

Good point, Heather. We only seem to equate nurture from birth but it must surely begin from the womb when you consider, e.g. mothers who drink and/or smoke
excessively.

Yes, I agree, nurture begins in the womb - not only because of how healthily the mother lives, but it also plays a role how anxious/confident she is, whether
she´s mellow or upbeat, stressed or relaxed, sad or happy ... it all affects the baby through her hormones.

Absolutely, this has been scientifically proved.

Yes, so many factors besides what the mother consumes.
Sooo, when people argue the nature theory, e.g. that it must be nature because my baby had certain personality traits from being a baby ... they could actually be related to the influences when in the womb. |

Yes - actually, what would be nature then, your genetic make-up, if everything after conception is nurture?
Remember when I mentioned that theory I read about, that homosexuality is something that is determined in the womb? I referred to that as "nature", but it would actually be (prenatal) "nurture", I guess. I don´t think homosexuality is genetic ... It could be a mixture of prenatal influences (=> hormones) and later experiences, but the book said our sexuality is fixed when we leave the womb. |

Corpsie I wrote:I haven't read the other replies, so I do apologize if I repeat certain things. I do think some traits are inherent, though how much they shape one's personality could be an interesting discussion to have for sure. I think more in terms that we are born with certain predispositions and depending on the environment one is raised in, and how the child is raised, some predispositions wil be reinforced and become great factors in the overall behavior of the person. This said, exactly how do you define personality? In itself, that's an interesting question. Are personality and behavior the same thing? I find these discussions fascinating, though they can be, at times, complicated conversations to have. Different people use the terminology differently, sometimes in subtle ways, so in a sense I would need to know, as precisely as possible, what the word personality means to you and how you differentiate it from behavior. |

I think personality is a lot more than beahaviour; personality is also about our feelings and the way we think, whereas behaviour focuses on the consequences of our feelings and thoughts - our actions. |

I agree with Jules, personality goes much deeper than behaviour.
If you´re interested, François, I have read a lot about and am fascinated with the enneagram theory of personality types, here´s the thread about it: http://www.ditto.yuku.com/topic/6523

I did take the enneagram test before, I scored as a Two, but barely, and I know results can change over time. Might be time to try it again.
