You must be so shocked!!

To me, the new song sounds very typical/average for U2, and I´d rate it as neither good nor bad. I don´t share your general dislike for them - I admittedly hated them when I was at school, simply because everybody else liked them (it was U2 mania, everybody wearing The Joshua Tree patches on their jackets etc.), but I started to like them later, in the early 90s, and bought their 1988 album Rattle and Hum, and I still think that´s a brilliant album (Desire, I Still Haven´t Found What I´m Looking For, Silver And Gold, Love Rescue Me, All I Want Is You ... still love all these, especially the last one). Then I really liked their Achtung Baby and Zooropa phase, when they changed their image from this we-are-so-alternative-goody-goody-against-war-peace-for-Northern-Ireland-Bono-is-the-new-Messiah thingy to cool and more glamorous (okay, Bono still thought he was the new Messiah, but so what, and he wore really cool sunglasses!! ). From Achtung Baby, I´d still listen to Love Is Blindness with great pleasure, very beautiful song, The Fly is still absolutely kick-ass, same for Zoo Station - they sound much more modern and innovative to me than the new song. Even Better Than The Real Thing is really good too. From Zooropa, I think Numb is hypercool (that´s where The Edge is singing or rather speaking most of the lyrics, with Bono singing "I feel numb" inbetween in a really high voice), just listening to that one btw. Dirty Day is cool too, and Zooropa, the title song, of course. I used to own Discotheque too, but it´s gone, I suppose I threw it away because I wasn´t so keen on it after all ...

As to Bono, if he were only a bit less obviously in love with himself, I´d still really like him - I wasn´t so allergic to people wanking off on themselves in my twenties, but am now. That said, he´s a fantastic singer IMO, outstanding voice and range, and used to be my favourite singer along with Sting once (who suffers from the same case of too much self-love, btw). Maybe I had/have rotten taste, with my unfortunate liking for a bit of drama and pathos? But then Matt Bellamy is quite in love with his own voice too, and I looooove him - so maybe I´ll be sick of him one day too.
