Posts: 69909 (25 May, 2009 12:54 PM) Administrator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None My friend, Val, has asked me to post this query for her to see if anyone has a clue what's going on here. Val sends an email to a contact (let's call her Pam), Pam receives it, but when she replies to Val's email (or tries to send a new email to Val), Val doesn't receive any. All the emails that Pam has sent to Val are in Pam's 'Sent' box but they are all highlighted grey. It is only the emails to Val that are singled out and highlighted grey like this. Val is Hotmail and Pam is AOL. This issue started recently. They never had the problem before. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?

Have each of them write an email to themselves. Yes, it sounds dumb, but it tests their sending & receiving capabilities. If Val can send & receive email from & to herself, then it could be Pam's email isn't configured properly. On the other hand if Pam can send herself this "test email" & receive it, she's got to start looking at her spam folder. I've heard that AOL's spam mail filter is a bit harsh, so I suspect the fault is in Pam's AOL. I have no idea how to "train" AOL to stop a certain sender to go into the spam filter. I suspect that if Pam & Val are able to send & receive their own email from themselves, the problem lies in Pam's junk mail. I suggest each of them should look in their own junk mail, & if they see the other person's mail there it should be a fairly easy thing to train their filter, not to reject that person's email.

They can both can send and receive all other emails. I wouldn't be surprised if it is AOL, as you say, if AOL are harsh on their spam filter. I'll email Val this link so she can read your advice for herself, and I'll post feedback if and when. Thanks very much for the advice, Alan.

Val appreciates your help and sends her thanks. She said she tried the email to herself and it works fine. She's also checked her spam/junk and there is nothing in there either - so it would appear it is her frined's AOL at fault, as you suggested.

(Which is my personal favorite.) That way they can speak unhindered by spam filters. In Yahoo Mail I can configure each and every sender as safe or spam. I do indeed still get spam in it, but is much less than I'd ordinarily get. AOL can be a pain from what I understand from a friend who has it. I know nothing about it, or I might be able to advise. Good luck to all, & in the meantime, they could meet in the pub for chit chat.

I wouldn't have an ISP email account (especially AOL) even if they paid me because you become tied and dependent on them. Once you decide to switch ISP you lose your email address and have to start all over again informing everyone, etc. I can never understand why people stick with the email addy their ISP provider give them rather than become independant. At least with Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail (I detest Hotmail) you can have them for a lifetime and access them anywhere.

She found 'Pam' sitting in the 'blocked list' under options. I hope Pam doesn't get wind of this. Good job I gave her a pseudonym.

In regards to AOL email addresses.. I have a free AOL email address that I can keep forever, and check from anywhere. Way back in the day, AOL was my ISP through dial up, and that is how I came to have my AOL address. But when we got cable internet, and dropped AOL, we were still able to keep our AOL addresses. They began to offer free email addresses, much like Hotmail and you don't have to be subscribed through the AOL ISP service. I find it works well for me. I also have an email address through Knology, (My current ISP) that I use too. But, like you said, if we ever decide to change ISP, I would lose that one. So, that is one reason why I keep my AOL address. I have tried Yahoo and Hotmail, but find it easier to keep using my AOL since I am so familiar with it. I have to agree though with Alan, AOL's spam filter is a bit harsh at times, but it is quick and easy to check the spam folder before emptying.

At work they call me "Big Al". Probably because I'm anything but really a huge guy, & it's just one of those names that stuck. I have a Yahoo Mail mailbox that I've had for ages. In a effort to remain anonymous, I changed my name from Alan to "Big Al". I figured all my friends would be able to connect me to it. I'd send mail from there, but no one would end up getting it. Finally, I sent something to myself. I found myself in my spam box. I surmised that "Big Al" sounded like a dirty old man to everyone's filters. I kept the same email address, but changed my name back to Alan, & everyone started getting my mail again. Go figure!
