And it goes without saying that Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter, is one of my favorite actors. And it looks like it's going to be really amazing looking. Although I must admit that I think some of the actors makeup is a bit on the wonky side. ...But nevermind that, I'm still excited!

It was American McGee's Alice I wanted to see and I think they abandoned the idea when faced with Burton competition but I'm not sure. One reason why I wasn't taken with Narnia (I only saw the first film) was because Mr Tumnus was nothing like I imagined, no criticism of James McAvoy, I just think he was miscast, hard to say about Johnny because if the make-up was better I might feel different but as it is I'm not impressed with his look or the red queen's - someone suggested Steve Buscemi would've been good and I think he might the mad hatter is an English toff. Also, I loved the first book, read it several times, totally adore the illustrations, but never got into the looking glass, tweedle dee etc. Truth is I don't think it's a story that adapts well to the screen, maybe that is because the illustrations were so good. edited to add, it just occurred to me who I think could be a brilliant mad hatter, Tom Hollander, most known for Pride & Prejudice and POTC - Well spoken english and not too tall because the hatter is not an overly tall chap. Posts: 1698 (25 Jun, 2009 2:00 AM) The Bad One Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Heather, I could see him as the Mad Hatter. ...Well my enthusiasm has been just a teeny bit damped, as I read the full article and see that this movie won't be an actual adaptation of Alice but a sequel of sorts. But hopefully it will keep as much of the dialogue and elements of the books as possible. I have had so much confidence in Tim Burton's version, because he has never been one to shy away from a dark story. And the Alice books have such dark undercurrents to them, with 'Through The looking Glass' being the darkest of the two. Heaven forbid it become yet another neutered cutesy, Disney-esque version.

I'm sure Johnny and Helena will be good, I don't watch it all when it's on tv (I hate the Oompalumpas (sp?) especially the singing) but he is good as Willy Wonka.

As you say, Jules, pity it won't be an actual adaptation of Alice but I guess a sequel of sorts is the next best thing. What a fantastic cast too! Pity we have to wait till 2010 to see it. It looks good-though the girl who plays Alice looks a little old for the part. I remember Fiona Fullerton playing her a long time ago and I have a version with Ken Dodd! Can't remember what part he plays though. I also liked Dreamchild- a film about Alice Liddell with Jim Henson created fantasy scenes interwoven into it. Ian Holm played Charles Ludwig Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and it was based upon Alices reminiscences when she was an elderly lady. But I always look forward to a new version.

From what I understand, since this version of Alice is supposed to be a sequel, apparently the character of Alice is now 17-years-old and returning to Wonderland years after her first visit. The only reasoning I can imagine for this aging of the character, is that perhaps the filmmakers thought that a child couldn't handle the complicated dialogue like an adult would be able to do.

Shortly after her second adventure, Alice's house is burned down by a fire, killing her parents, and leaving her as the only survivor. Because of the guilt, she tries to commit suicide (bandages can be seen on her wrists), and becomes catatonic. She is institutionalised in Rutledge Asylum. Years later, the White Rabbit summons Alice to aid a radically altered Wonderland, now under the despotic rule of the Queen of Hearts. The Cheshire Cat serves as Alice's companion throughout the game, frequently appearing to guide her with cryptic comments. The game's setting presents a considerably more macabre rendition of Wonderland than that of Lewis Carroll's original portrayal. Wonderland, being a creation of Alice's mind, has been corrupted by her insanity. link Apparently that still has a date, of 2010 on IMDb, but the set backs it's had are odd, big studios (Disney) pulling strings probably.
