In the The Person Above Me game, Julia said about her friend Annie that she has a heart of gold. And Annie said that was one of the nicest compliments she had ever had. So, let´s share some of the positive things people have said about us. It can be a recent compliment or something someone said to us years and years ago and that we never forgot. Don´t be modest or afraid of sounding like you´re "bragging", this is about feeling good about ourselves. Others often see our strengths much more clearly than we do, because a lot of people (including myself) tend to concentrate on their weaknesses. I also think that Ditto is a very, very positive place. It seems to attract only the nicest of people, and I feel I have improved very much as a person in my one and a half years of being a member here. I already mentioned it in the What Made You Smile? thread, but I´ll copy it because it also belongs in here: I smiled because the mum of one of my younger pupils sent me such a nice e-mail, thanking me for her son´s recent good grades, told me how much he enjoys the lessons, said she could not imagine him in any better hands, and concluded what a great teacher I was and how good at what I´m doing. Actually, I did not smile, I beamed, and have continued beaming (inside) all day.

I just hope people aren't shy about admitting the compliments they've received. Okay, I'll go next. I received a compliment once saying that if I my mouth I could be very sweet. Okay, serious, I often get compliments from my tutees and their parents similar to yours (though I'm sure you've had many more too), which makes the job all the more worthwhile knowing you're appreciated. I'm not at all surprised you got that compliment as I'd never never expect anything but the best from you. Next!

At least I took it as such... it is why I feel the way I do about certain things and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

It´s one I´d like to hear too. And it is very true, you are intense. Julia, actually, I don´t get many compliments like this. If I did, I´d go to work singing every day. Actually, I get little thanks and a lot of criticism because the parents expect miracles from me when their spoilt, immature, stupid, lazy brats don´t make the least effort to get any better. That´s why I´m often so frustrated, I do so much, and a lot of it unpaid, and then I get reproached for something that´s not my fault. That´s why this mother´s e-mail made me so very happy.

Cass, any lack of compliments must be down to the age group you teach. Who'd teach teens!? You deserve a medal!! I teach mostly adults, who are motivated to learn, and under 12s, who are delightful. Shame you get them when they've turned into monsters.

I also remember a few years back 3 people over a period of 3 days told me that my smile would light up a room. The same thing happened to me on my last trip to The UK. I smiled opened a shop door for an elderly gentleman. He then proceeded to follow me up the street. He told me it was my smile that attracted him to me,and asked me if i was single. I told him no i wasn't and that there would be lots of nice single lady's that would smile at him. He said yes there is but their smile would only light up their face mine lit the whole town up. Corny i know but it made me smile . I always try to give someone a compliment to make their day. My youngest son once said to me. "Mum you are too soft, and let people put on you. Posts: 8256 ( 3 Jul, 2009 10:12 PM) Alvida Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	It's not fair that you don't get enough credit, Cass, you are obviously a very good teacher, I'd imagine most if not all of your students are having extra one on one tuition because they don't fair well in a subject to begin with or it's required they do extremely well, in either case there has to be parents at the back of it with high expectations and if the kid simply can't get their head around it and/or won't try it's not fair they criticise you. It's not fair on you and not fair on their child, often many parents pile on too much pressure about schoolwork, I didn't ever have that myself, I was never asked if I had homework, nor made to do it straight after school, which is why I'd be doing several lots at 11pm on sunday night. Not that there was a lack of interest, I suppose I was just trusted from quite a young age to delegate my own time and be responsible enough to get on with it, and it was taken for granted I'd try my best and if I did poorly I simply wasn't good at that subject. I think it's lovely that the parent emialed you, and it would be nice if people did things like that more often, the truth is there must naturally be plenty more cases where parents are very pleased but generally people only give feedback when they are dissatisfied.

You are the most fun person to be on a night out with. you are very generous, honest, reliable and helpful. There are loads more i could give you about your looks, but there not as important than what you offer. Cassia. You are so modest , that it is very endearing. You don't realise what a lovely and clever lady you are. I love your openness. Not forgetting your gorgeous hair and very young face Heather i don't feel as i know you as much as some of the others, but you are so knowledgeable about all topics and i sense that you would make a very good friend and stand up for peoples rights. I can easily understand the compliments about your smile because it's the first thing that attracted me to you when I joined your class (my new school) aged around 9, after my mum had moved me from my previous school where I was being bullied by Pat youknowwho. You gave me a lovely genuine friendly smile and I just knew we were going to be friends. Heather!! You are far too modest. I'm sure you must've had hundreds of compliments.

I actually prefer to teach teens - I refuse to teach grades 1 to 4, and am not too keen on grade 5 unless the pupil is quite mature. Grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 are my favourites. Most of my students are really nice, some are just pretty hopeless cases, a combination of no talent for languages, not reading enough (or not at all), a bad memory, and starting the private lessons way too late, with too many gaps in their knowledge, so that I´m expected to revise years in just one weekly lesson, and quick results please!! It´s the expectations of the parents that are off, they simply have no clue how long it takes - with some children - until they get better. I´ve had students who improved from a grade D to a B in tests in just one or two months, but those are bright and have a normal or even good memory, and just had incompetent teachers and mainly needed their knowledge sorted and restructured, and a good dose of encouragement. With others, it takes ages until I´ve managed to cram something into their heads, and then it´s gone again the following week. The parents can´t afford to send their child more often than once a week, and then they expect miracles from me. Oh well, I know I do my best, I just wish it got appreciated a bit more. Some of my students do compliment me on my teaching though, and the odd parent here and there, but this mother´s e-mail was special, and I treasure it.

My parents did have high expectations, but trusted me and never controlled me, hence why I grew into a self dependent person. One thing they were really fair about was when a subject just wasn´t my thing, like physics, they did not care whether I got a D in a subject like that, they did not care about a D in maths either, they knew I wouldn´t work in that area later anyway. It´s a bit different with English though (that´s what I teach the most), it´s a very important subject, you can´t really do without it, no matter what kind of job you plan to do later in life, and so the parents are right in paying for extra lessons. But I perfectly agree that generally, expectations seem to be much higher nowadays, much more pressure than we got at school, and yet it seems to me that my generation did much better at school. And now let´s hear a compliment that you received, oh lovely Heather. Ditto to what Annie said about you, especially that you are a great friend, and stand up for your friends´ rights (and other people´s and animals´ too). I like it that you you said you love my openness, it´s something I like about myself too. I´ll pay you a compliment back: I think you are the ideal mother, very loving, caring and nurturing, without ever getting smothering, and fun and open too, a great buddy. If I didn´t already have a lovely mum, and if I wasn´t too old to be your daughter, I´d love to have you as a mum.

Further and Adult Ed funding providers have cut funding for basic literacy and numeracy because they expected instant results, they wanted to see visible progression via exams. However, there's no way that's going to happen within the timescale the government and funding providers expect, especially not with students who have huge barriers to learning, such as learning difficulties, family and work commitments, etc. If they couldn't master basic literacy and numeracy at school with daily hourly lessons over a minimum ten years, there is no way they are going to fill all those 1000s of missing gaps in a term, a year or even five, with just one or two basic literacy classes week, not with all the other commitments adults have to deal with, and the fact that it is so much harder to learn and remember as adults than it is for children. Some of these students have been coming to basic skills classes for years just to learn how to write their name and address (of course, that's the lower ability ones - others are pre-GCSE ability). When the government initiated this plan to reduce the number of basic skills need in UK by half in less than a decade, I think they forgot to put their brains in. They have now realised it ain't going to happen and funding is now being cut. Ooops, sorry for going on. Back on topic - I fear people are too bashful to post in here about compliments they've received. Hmmm, I think we may need to entice them in. Any ideas?

It would be an honour to have you as a daughter. I wasn't fortunate to have one. I f you were my daughter i could pass on to you all the lovely perfumes i have been given as gifts, and still in their boxs. I know that you love perfumes. If i didn't already have a lovely family. I wouldn't have any trouble finding a ditto family. Without mentioning names i could pick a husband, 3 sons and 3 daughters who i know that would make a great and loving family. But i already have that. So maybe next time were all back on this planet.

She told me that I have done a great job in raising Jacob up in the right way and that you can tell from his behavior that I am a very good mother. I was on cloud nine for a while after she said it, because she is my mentor/role model and it made me feel wonderful hearing that from her.

And of course you are a great mother, I can easily feel that in all your posts when you talk about Jacob and Kyle. My mum said to me once that my flat was always so tidy, clean and beautiful, and that made me feel really proud too, because I have my tidiness from her (everything that is "correct" about me I have from my mum).
